# Growth | Multipliers and Point Accrual

## This article explains how customers earn points on completed orders, including how the base point rate and multipliers work, and how point accrual is calculated based on order subtotal.

### How Point Accrual is Calculated

Points are earned based on the order **subtotal** — not the final order total. Taxes and fees are excluded from point accrual, and any discounts applied to the order will reduce the subtotal amount points are earned on.

This subtotal rule applies no matter how many points a customer ultimately earns per dollar. Whether they're earning at the base rate alone, or at a higher rate because of a tier or promotional multiplier, the calculation always starts from the same subtotal — multipliers change *how many points per dollar*, not *which dollars count*.

The actual number of points a customer earns then depends on your store's **Base Point Rate** (set up in Multiplier Rules). For example, if your Base Point Rate is 1 point per $1 spent:

Example 1:  No Discount

- Order subtotal: $40
- Taxes and fees: $15
- Order total: $55
- Points are earned on the $40 subtotal → customer earns **40 points**

Example 2:  Discount Applied

- Order subtotal: $40
- Discount: -$10
- Taxes and fees: $8
- Order total: $38
- Points are earned on the $30 subtotal minus the discount ($40 - $10 = $30) → customer earns **30 points**

### Multiplier Rules 

The base point rate always applies. Eligible bonuses are added, never multiplied. 

- Point Accrual - Choose how completed orders earn points(per $ spent or per visit) 
    - **Per $ Spent** - Points are earned based on order subtotal, as described above.
    - **Per Visit** - Points are earned per completed order rather than per dollar. Selecting this option reveals two additional settings: 
          - **Minimum Product Value** - The order must meet this dollar threshold in product value before it earns any points.
          - **Max Accruals Per Day** - Limits how many times a customer can accrue points in a single day.
- Base Point Rate - Setup the points earned for every dollar spent so that customers can accumulate rewards. 
- Stacking Rule 
    - Tier + highest *recommended *- Base rate plus the tier bonus and highest eligible promotional bonus.
    - Highest only - Base rate plus only the larger of the tier or promotional bonus.
