Before You Begin

Splitting a Metrc batch allows you to divide an existing batch of inventory into a new package with its own unique Metrc tag. This feature is exclusively available for retailers operating in Metrc-integrated states.

Why would you split a batch?

Common use cases for splitting a batch include:

  • Moving partial inventory to a different shop or physical location.

  • Separating sellable product from damaged, defective, or expired product.

  • Segregating inventory designated for wholesale versus retail.

Compliance Impact:
When you split a batch in BLAZE, it automatically updates Metrc. You are effectively telling the state compliance system that a portion of the original inventory now exists as a completely distinct, traceable unit. The original package quantity will be reduced, and a new package will be created with the new tag.

Prerequisites

Before attempting to split a batch, please review the following critical requirements:

  • App: BLAZE Web Dashboard

  • Requirement: You must have available Metrc tags in your system before starting the split process.

  • Package Location Tracking: > IMPORTANT: Package Location Tracking should only be enabled for Oregon, MA, and CA microbusiness licenses only. If Package Location Tracking is enabled for your shop, you cannot split partial batches. The system restricts partial splits to ensure exact location mapping in Metrc.

Step 1: Retrieve an Available Metrc Tag

You must have a new, unused Metrc tag ready to assign to the newly split batch before navigating to your inventory.

  1. Navigate to Retail > Compliance > Available Metrc Tags.

  2. Locate and copy an available CannabisPackage tag. You will need to paste this tag into an input box during the split workflow.

Step 2: How to Split a Batch

Once you have copied a new Metrc tag, you are ready to perform the split.

  1. Navigate to Inventory > All.

  2. Find the product containing the batch you would like to split and click on the Product Name to open the product profile.

  3. Click on the Batches tab.

  4. Locate the specific batch you need to divide and click the Split icon on the far right.

Troubleshooting & Error Handling

If you run into issues while splitting a batch, refer to these common scenarios:

  • What if I have no available tags?

If you do not have any tags available in the Available Metrc Tags list, you cannot proceed with the split. You must first order new tags in your Metrc account and wait for them to sync, or manually Import Metrc Tags into BLAZE.

  • What if the split fails?

If the system rejects your split, verify your quantity. The split will fail if the amount entered in the Quantity field exceeds the current live quantity of the original batch. Ensure you are splitting an amount equal to or less than what is actually available.

  • What happens to the original batch after the split?

Once the split is successfully completed, the original batch's quantity is automatically reduced by the amount you split off. The original batch retains its original Metrc tag, while a brand-new batch profile is generated in BLAZE containing your designated split quantity and the new Metrc tag.
